OK...I think this is the Friday night that we talked about trying a bracket race for the street bike guys. $25 to enter, $125 to win, $75 to R/U, $25 to 3-4...First round buy backs for $10, .500 tree, 1/4 mile race.....this payout is based on a minimum of 10 bikes.
I have been asked about who will get to run this class...if it is for street bikes only or can drag bikes run...my thoughts on this is that we have had incredible support from street bike guys this year, so we will limit it to street bike guys only. Not saying we wouldn't do something for drag bikes in the future, but for this race...no drag bikes.
That means no wheelie bars, no slicks, no air shifters??? Anything else Doc or Creek? Let me know what you guys think, but we are really excited about this at OIR and hope that it will turn into something much bigger.
..Phil just walked in and said, if there is a lot of you guys that come out for this he will up the payout. Just a carrot for you guys to come out, but I thought it was pretty cool. So tell your buddies, call the Arkansas group and come have some fun!!
Thats awesome Daniel, Thank you. and thanks to phil for the generosity.
As for the Drag bikes, We have been running with them at other places and have been very competetive with them. Being a bracket I personally dont have a problem with them. I like to see them run. Just a thought here but mabey rather than limiting the race by class, for safety reasons with the shorter runoff at oir, limit it to a speed. ex. no bikes faster than 9.00 or 160mph. This is just a suggestion because its been work trying to get all the bikes organized Id hate to exclude anyone at this point. kick it around and let us know what you think.
Absolutely! Test and tune is Friday night. The bikes are in addition to what normally goes on. A more coordinated addition. It makes the night a little more interesting to have some type of competition mixed in with the many runs of street cars and racers looking for that extra tenth or hundreth of a second.
The only thing I would say no to is the wheely bars because I don't really see where a slick and airshifter can really make much of an advantage over any other bike. What i'am getting at is that some of us have airshifters on our bikes, the only advantage they have is you shift with a button unstead of pulling in on a clutch after you are heading down the track. You are still leaving the line using the clutch.
But as far as I'am concerned let everyone race and put a ET/MPH brake on it. So we can get more people running.
But if the airshifter rule stands please post because I will have to get mine off.
Still taking suggestions on this.....but here is what Phil is thinking. Because the majority of bikes that have been coming out this year is the street bikes and "newbies" to drag racing. We would like to leave this class open and more competitve to those guys....instead of the seasoned bracket racers.
In my opinion, the air shifter would be one of the biggest helps to being a consistent bracket racer....you just push a button, less chance to miss a gear, more accuracy on your shift point, more consistent over all. but what do I know...I don't have a bike and am not completely familiar with how they (air shifters) work.
If there is enough interest we would be open to a once per month bike race, possibly two classes. Like a beginner street bike entry level class, and a more advanced drag bike type class. But for this race we are leaning towards trying to get the entry level guys more involved.
Thats cool, Personally I like my air shifter (which wont be on the bike this race) just because it allows me to change my riding posture, My consitency seems about the same. it just gets me down the track quicker since I can take a more aggresive position on the bike. while I had it on the old bike Ive had my butt handed to me by an sv650 in the first race and a stock r6 in the second. So I dont know how much of a consistency advantage it is. just for curiosity, I went to the 2004 ama/prostar rule book and heres what it states.
Legal electronics: Delay boxes, ignition booster, stutter boxes, two-steps, nitrous timers, electronic throttle stops, electric shifters and shift lights. Motorcycles with electronic timers turning on nitrous oxide must also have a throttle switch to turn off the system when not at full throttle. RPM or timer activated automated shifters allowed in T/G, S/C, S/G, and P/ET. Wiring harness must be loomed in a fashion that would allow easy tracing and inspection of wiring, i.e. no taped or covered wires.
I sure dont want to get hung up on any rules, personally im a run what you brung and hope you brung enough type. As far as I know most of the bikers feel that way. I sure dont want any newbies to be intimidated and not run with us so what ever you guys want is fine, Im just happy to be racing at OIR!
I don't care if they have airshifters and/or a slick. The no wheelie bars rule I like. The hardest part of racing a bike is the launch. It is just too easy (with wheelie bars) to drop the clutch and go . That's my two cents I just want to see alot of bikes down there.
OK, here is my two cents. I have been waiting for this race for two weeks now. I have no problem with an et/mph limit in a bracket race at OIR. In fact if we are running 1/4 mile it is a good idea due to shut down space. BUT...if it is a bracket race lets keep it that way. There are 600 cc bikes that will outrun my 900 as my bike will be lucky to run 11s in the quarter. Now I have to stay home because of a wheelie bar/air shifter? I will not run my bike without one due to the car slick. I also can NOT shift without the button due to chassis set up. My bike is a dragbike and was not built to be foot shifted, ever. I will come out if I can run my bar/air shift but if not good luck to everyone else. I also am far from a seasoned bracket racer as I built the bike for fun and have yet to enter it on race day anywhere. I will keep an eye on this to see the outcome.
Don't get me wrong...I DO see Phil's point on this and will say no more if this is not opened up for dragbikes. I have allways had a good time at OIR on the track or in the stands and look forward to doing so in the future!
Ok, race day is approaching rapidly and looks like its time for a decision on the rules.
For what its worth my vote is still for an open et bracket any flavor of motorcycle is good for me.
There were wheelie bar drag bikes at both of the Sat bike eliminators that have been run at oir this year and they diddnt win either time. Besides David and Josh both run drag bikes and they are just good guys I think that the event would be better for it if they were there. just my .02
this friday night will be street bikes only. We will look at doing something with the drag bikes next month. like a two class event or something, but for this friday street bikes only. Thanks for all those who posted and i do get all your angles...and we have considered them for a race next month...maybe doing a once a month deal with two classes or something???
We will have to get into that later...thanks again and see ya friday night.
It won't be a problem for me to come down and pay the usual ten bucks and make some 1/4 mile time trials, maybe in behind the streetbike class will it? If its ok I will come down to play anyway.......
Well that was a lot of fun!! Thanks again to OIR for hosting this. I hope that the turn out was good enough that we can do this again. Im sure that it will only grow from here. Daniel get with me on a date for the next one and Ill make up some flyers and get them to all the bike shops (even the harley shops) with a little pr work this will grow quickly.
Winners Circle: 1st place: Pat Richardson 2nd Place: Jamie Terry 3rd place: Darren "Doc" Hengle 4th Place: Jim "hooter" Hootenpyle

Hey Doc? What do you mean " even the Harley shops ???" he he he I'm just flippin' you sh**.!
Looks like an interesting thread. We have been trying different combinations for a couple of years to keep our bike program going and growing at Mokan. I WISH all the Mokan friday night fun drag guys would come out on race day...Man we would have one hell of a program! We have been out on fri. here and talked to them about it , and no-sale. So we stay w/ the run what you brung program, and on those days when we do get a better crowd, the owner makes the $$ more worth it. As far as having enough bikes to run 2 classes....good luck... you figure that one out and let me know.
As far as being fair to all bikes. The dang sportbikes from Ozark ( doc & his gang)have been down here and whipped most of our bar bikes as*es 2 for 2. But the best part is that they were here. And if you want a bike rogram, you better thank those guys that travel to run, and help them out when it comes to the things that are different from track to track....ie when to line up....whether or not to deep stage, where to pit, how the ladder for the bikes works. you know, stuff that seems different every freekin place you go. ( I hope we have done that Doc ) We had plans to show up late for the Ozark bike drag after work, but my rider was called out of town on business. I owe Doc an appology for that one. I was really looking forward to showing support for the bikes.
as far as equipment - I am suprised I didnt hear anyone mention cross over delays???? Or nitrous oxide , after market turbo's?? I say if it brings you to the drag strip, is a safe ride, & = another entry .......bring it . ( can harley's race? )
its not like these guys are wanting to show up to take away someone's 100 bucks. Our outlaw bike costs more to unload than what we will win at any track in the area on a regular race ( and thats IF WE WIN !). If it's about the big $$ to win, get another hobby. Trust me ..... the $ is not the reason to stage a motorcycle in the midwest. Motorcycle dragracing at our level wont pay many bills.
Wheelie bars really don't give you an advantage short of mousetrapping the damn bike over backwards. If you can't cut a light you can have 3 wheelie bars and get spanked. The most deadly weapon in your racing arsenal is not equipment at all. It is knowing your machine and riding it. Practice timing the light, and your RT- run the # out the back door with out sandbagging. THAT will put you in the $$ more than wheelie bars, or slix, or whatever. And you will have earned one hell of a win!
I in no way want this to sound harsh....just wanted you to see it from another angle. Hell anyone that knows me will attest, I love this sport, love to ride, And try to do my part to make both last as long as possible! See you in the staging lanes! Rob Lewis crew Chief , JC Racing, Hiram Motorsports, and Project V
PS Mokan this sat. and Sun. bring a tent and run both. If you do...save me a trailer slot for Sunday ! he he he

Thanks for the input Rob! you guys have been great to us over there, we apprieciate it! We have always felt more than welcome and you have helped us every step of the way. I hope that we can return the hospitality over here in our little corner of the world.
This program is in its infantile stages and I hope to see it grow well. I think your right about running two classes, Ive been working on selling this program all year and it has been difficult to hustle up bikes. I know Daniel and the OIR crew are open to suggestions and are also excited to see this program grow. So Im hoping/suggesting that for the next event we do try a different combination. the run what you brung open class and see how it goes.
As for the advantages of add on equipment, I see it like this, all that stuff will make you go faster,( and I like faster) but the consistency is in the hands of the pilot every time. When you line up against anyone just look at it like this, Im going to cut a light and Im going to run my dial, its his job to figure out how to beat me, not the other way around.
Oh yeah and rob you can bring the hardly well let it run! lol
I know for a fact they will lose my bike for the bracket races if they don't allow at least a airshifter at the next race.
I don't know if Daniel noticed or not but there was only one person that was new to the bracket race seen and he was like the rest of us as far as the rules it didn't matter to him what ran.
Maybe next time let all the bikes run(street and drag). Have a group meeting and just ask what we think. I don't care if dragbikes run. We need all the bike we can get.
